Chapter 18

Drevath

Hannah has turned my world upside down.

I never should’ve tasted her, but I couldn’t resist her advances. If I’m being completely honest, I didn’t want to resist her. I wanted her more than I’ve wanted anything before in my life. Now I’m consumed by her. My mating instinct grows strong every time we’re near. It’s making me cross and ornery, and I’m beginning to think fighting this attraction isn’t worth it anymore.

After we test the explosions, I walk her back to her tent like I always do. She doesn’t speak and I know she’s still embarrassed about what happened after the pool. I, on the other hand, have never experienced something so intense. She’s a sexual creature, her body responsive to my touch, and I want to touch her again. So badly.

“Good night,” she says when we pause outside her tent. Before she can turn away from me, I reach out and take her hand in mine. She’s surprised as I rub my large fingers over her smooth hand, memorizing the touch of her before I retire to my tent for the night. Our eyes meet as a soft breeze blows her scent toward me. My spine tingles, my muscles tense as I fight the desire to follow her and claim her as mine.

“Are you okay?” she asks. “Your eyes are turning red.”

I turn away quickly, dropping her hand to walk away, the woods calling my name as I fight my growing mating instincts. The other warriors look at me as if they know exactly what’s going on with me. They keep their distance from her, knowing I’ve unofficially claimed her as mine. The woods are dark and quiet as I make the rounds, checking the borders of our camp to ensure our enemy isn’t scouting the area for ways to infiltrate.

We’ve been lucky to avoid another round of snow so soon after the huge storm. Still, it’s cold enough that the snow isn’t going anywhere. Hannah is here to stay until we can safely move the wagons in the snow. Unfortunately, I’m not as adamant about her leaving anymore.

I’ve reached the last row of trees when I spot tracks in the snow. Leaning down for a closer inspection, I quickly realize they aren’t animal tracks. My instincts kick in and I’m moving along the prints, following to see where they lead. I’m the only one who walks this route, the rest of the warriors are given posts in the trees. My head is ringing with alarm. One Thren sneaking into our camp is just as dangerous as an entire attack party. If they’re trying to learn our layout and analyze our defenses, they’re planning something, even though they’ve been quiet lately.

The tracks follow close to the trees. At first, they keep to the border, and I imagine our enemy watching our movement through the trees. My heart drops when the footprints turn, moving closer to the tents. Something, or someone, has caught his attention.

A strangled squeal breaks the silence of the night and I’m tearing through the trees straight for Hannah’s tent.
